Naipo Serenaders - 1979

In 1979, Kokua Records released an album produced by Nancy Gustafsson and Victor Rittenband called, “Hawaiian Happening”, featuring The Naipo Serenaders.
The Naipo Serenaders consisted of George Kahulanui Naipo on bass & vocals; His wife, Charlene Ku’uipo Naipo on guitar & vocals; And his cousin, Alma Kalahikiola Ahuna on piano & vocals.
While performing at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel in Waikiki, they recorded this album.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite recordings from “Hawaiian Happening” from 1979.

Palani Vaughan - 1970

In 1970, Hula Records released an album produced by Don McDiarmid, Jr. called, Hawaiian Love Songs, featuring Palani Vaughan.
Orchestral arrangements were by Seji Hiraoka of Japan.
Frank ‘Palani’ Vaughan, Jr. was born on May 27, 1944, and we lost him, at the age of 72, on December 8, 2016.
After recording Meet Palani Vaughan & the Sunday Manoa in 1967, Palani joined the Hawaii National Guard.
Upon his return, he recorded Hawaiian Love Songs in 1970.
By 1973, Palani began writing and recording his Ia ‘Oe E Ka La series of 4 volumes to honor King Kalakaua.

Benny Kalama - 1984

In 1984, Lehua Records released an album produced by Jerry Byrd called, “He IS Hawaiian Music”, featuring Benny Kalama.
Benny Kalama, the extraordinary falsetto singer, arranger, and musician, who had made so many other Hawaiian music stars great, was coaxed into making a solo recording.
He was backed on this recording by Hiram Olsen on rhythm guitar,
Kalani Fernandes on bass,
Randy Oness on ukulele,
and Alan Akaka on steel guitar.

Nina Keali'iwahamana & Bill Kaiwa - 1978

In 1978, Lehua Records paired Nina Keali’iwahamana & Bill Kaiwa together for an album of duets and solos.
Nina Keali’iwahamana was the renoun “Hawaii Calls” vocalist, while Bill Kaiwa was performing with the United Airlines Hawaiian shows.
Benny Kalama was the musical director and played ukulele.
Jerry Byrd played steel guitar.
Jimmy Funai played 12-string & electric guitar,
And Sonny Nicholas played bass.

Hui Ohana - 1972

In 1972, the group “Hui Ohana” exploded upon Hawaiian music scene with their debut record, “Young Hawaii Plays Old Hawaii”.
The trio featured fraternal twin brothers Ledward & Nedward Ka’apana, with their cousin, Dennis Pavao.
With breathtaking guitar work, engaging bass runs, and amazing falsetto vocals, the group brought Hawaiian music back to its roots.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite “Hui Ohana” recordings from their debut June 26, 1972 recording session.
