Territorial Airwaves - Genoa Keawe (The Early Years)

This show originally aired on December 16, 2011.

Genoa Leilani Kawaihapai Adolpho Keawe was born on Halloween, October 31, 1918, and we lost her at the age of 89 on February 25, 2008. Young Genoa’s musical training began in Lai’e when she started singing with the Mormon Choir taught by Amoe Meyers. Her professional career began in 1939, when she sang for bandstand shows in Kailua, O’ahu. But once she sang over the radio for John Almeida, she was destined to become one of the legends of Hawaiian music. Listening to her initial recordings give us a glimpse into the emerging Hawaiian music voice extraordinaire.
