Many young Hawaiian entertainers traveled to the Mainland US in the 1920s and 1930s to seek fame and fortune.
They traveled from coast to coast, and secured recording contracts with some of the biggest record labels of the day.
But their success sometimes came at a price, as they would have to balance their presentations with a healthy dose of hip and popular musical selections in addition to their Hawaiian numbers to get work.
Imagine if the many Hawaiian groups currently traveling to Japan were forced to insert a Japanese song every 3rd selection in their program! Hollywood and New York wanted popular 1920s & 1930s pop hits to supplement the Hawaiian ‘stuff’.
