Kahauanu Lake, also known as "Uncle K", passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6, at the age of 79.  A master Hawaiian musician, whose career spanned over 60 years, was the leader of "The Kahauanu Lake Trio".  His collaboration with Kumu Hula Ma'iki Aiu Lake, who he married in 1972, created signature pieces such as "Pua 'Ahihi", "Pua Lililehua",  and the hapa haole classic, "Maile Lei".  Together they inspired a new generation of hula practictioners and musicians.  Kahauanu Lake was a treasured friend and supporter of "Territorial Airwaves", and will be dearly missed.   I fondly recall his revolutionary and daring presentations of mele for the hula, his
meticulous arrangements and his elegantly simple styling.  I was
fortunate enough to have had Kahauanu on the Territorial Airwaves show several times and was humbled by the depth of his storytelling as he wove detailed geneologies and historical events effortlessly as I sat spellbound.
Click on our "Territorial Radio" section, and click on page 7 to hear Kahauanu greet you.
